So we all know that we shouldn't drink and drive
because we are impaired if we know it or not. Now
what can we do to stop our friends and family or ANYONE
who is about to get behind the wheel and is obviously
drunk. Our first response is to usually argue with
this intoxicated person and tell them that they are
too drunk to drive. Then the person says something
like " I only had a few, I feel fine.".
So how do you argue logic with someone who has been
drinking? with physical proof. That's why we endorse
the use of the legal limit breathalyzer key chain,
it gives you physical proof that the person is intoxicated.
Your no longer in an un-winnable battle of wills that
will just delay the person and make them upset ( Which
could be even more dangerous).
With a Legal Limit breathalyzer key chain you have
the best weapon around to fight the war on drunk driving
and that's why we condone it. YAERD believes that
trying to make the world stop driving after drinking
any alcohol is never going to happen as long as it's
the person's legal right to do so. Instead show the
person what they are about to do is illegal and they
could lose their license if they get caught.
Now your probably thinking "Just losing their
license is getting off lucky, what if they kill someone!"
Well the truth is most intoxicated people don't think
that they could kill someone or themselves, it's just
too far out their for them to realize so you bring
up what is very conceivable to them like losing their
license or jail time. Tell them if they pass the breathalyzer
you will let them drive but if they fail they have
to hand over the keys. Most of the time if there noticeably
drunk they will fail the breathalyzer test.
Many portable breathalyzer tests you see out their
are for novelty purposes only and will often give
different consecutive readings even if you use it
as instructed. The only breathalyzer key chain we have
found to work accurately is the Legal Limit brand
breathalyzer and even passed with Flying colors from
an unbiased FOX news report. This key chain
breathalyzer boasts an impressive 98% accuracy and
although we handed out hundreds around
Pittsburgh's bar districts and we didn't have one
off reading!
Here are some ways to decrease drunk driving
if you are throwing a party.
* Collect car keys from your guests.
* Always serve food with alcohol.
* Have several jiggers or self-measuring one-ounce
bottle spouts at the bar to mix drinks.
* If you serve alcoholic punch, use a non-carbonated
base such as fruit juice.
* Serve non-alcoholic beverages.
* Do not force drinks on your guests or rush to refill
their glasses when empty.
* Stop serving alcohol about two hours before the
party is over.
* If you observe a guest drinking too much: engage
him/her in conversation to slow down the drinking.
* offer high protein food like pizza, shrimp or spareribs.
* offer to make the next drink, using less alcohol
and mixing it with a non-carbonated base.
Prevention: Ideas for Parents
There are 3 important things parents can do to reduce
the chances their children will use alcohol or other
drugs:
* Establish clear rights, rules, and limits
within the family (effective discipline).
* Provide children with good role models.
* Build strong bonds to family and school.
The 5 C's of Effective Discipline
* Clarity - Be clear when setting rules,
rights, and limits. Don't assume children intrinsically
know your family rules. Talk about them and be sure
your children understand why they are being established.
Involve them in making the rules--you can even write
them out and put them on the refrigerator.
* Consistency - Be consistent in enforcing
rules. If a change needs to be made, talk with your
child about it before the rule is broken. Be flexible,
make necessary changes as your children grow.
* Communication - Talk about rules, rights,
and limits often. Be willing to discuss fairness and
reasons for rules. Help your child learn to communicate
about feelings and needs.
* Caring - Carry out discipline using encouragement
and support, not just disciplinary action. Criticize
the action, not your child. Stay calm when carrying
out discipline. Respect your children's rights, such
as privacy.
* Create - Create a sense of social responsibility
in your child. Expect moral behavior, like honesty
and fairness.

. Impaired driving can be defined as a reduction in
the performance of critical driving tasks due
to the effects of alcohol or other drugs. It is a
serious crime that kills every 30 minutes.
Community groups play a crucial role in organizing
impaired driving programs at the local level.
Help your community take action with the following
NHTSA toolkits
I mplementing a Designated Driver program for educators
and drinking-age college students can be done
fairly easily by involving campus organizations and
local businesses.
